Interesting idea. Some tough decisions to be made there, not least of all restrictions on who is allowed to move into a country. Visas etc, and associated costs including medical provision. I’m intrigued to see where you go with it (both figuratively and literally).

I love the idea of slow travel and trying out different places and I would choose that life if I could. It might also help narrow down where you might want to settle (or if you do want to settle somewhere.) And if anyone can pack for that—it’s certainly you! You are genius at packing.

You could also pick a home base for six months and travel from there?

We're tossing around multiple ideas. Without visas, we could base ourselves in Schengen countries for up to 90 days out of every 180. In between, we could go to non-Schengen places.

This would cover your year of slow travel. But what means are you finding to allow actually immigrating to another country? As Deborah points out, it seems to be difficult on many fronts.

We're looking at different countries' official websites to start with. If, for example, we wanted to do slow travel through Europe for a year, we could (again, theoretically), spend 90 out of 180 days in Schengen countries, alternating the rest of the time in, say, Ireland and other non-Schengen countries. I'm not sure this is the plan we'll go with, however, so we're looking at different visa requirements for different places.

Could you consider a staging plan? Plan to carry stuff for a 3 month trip, keeping other items in a single location (relatives house, storage unit), then refilling/repacking periodically? Or plan to buy things along the way. Start with a minimal carry, add and discard things as needed. I have not done it myself but many travelers shop thrift stores, buying and donating items locally , then move on to next destination.

That's an interesting idea! I will ponder this. Thank you.
