still open
I am really glad that the U.S. government managed to avoid a shutdown earlier this month. Not just for all the major reasons involving people’s income and the functioning of our country, but also because our national parks trip starts very, very soon.
By the day before the shutdown would have occurred, my husband and I had decided that we would go on our vacation anyway, even if the parks were closed. We will mostly be staying in locally-owned accommodations whose owners would have been negatively impacted by a lack of tourism dollars, and we knew we could find plenty of things to do even without the national parks.
Luckily, the shutdown has been averted (for now) and our trip is still on and the National Parks Service won’t be losing millions of dollars in much-needed revenue every day during a federal closure. I am ridiculously excited about every aspect of our plans.
We’ve been really lucky with our travels and have rarely been impacted by something so major that it would have canceled a trip or changed the plans massively. Knock on wood, this luck continues.
What about you? Have you ever had travel impacted by something like a government shutdown, hurricane, volcanic eruption, or something else?
