Following up on my post about teeny tiny mini getaways, this past weekend, we had a quick getaway of 35 hours.
For this jaunt, three of the four people in my household drove to Virginia Beach on Friday, where we went to the aquarium and had a delightful time. Then, we stayed in a hotel with beautiful ocean views and relaxed. It was a nice getaway in its own right.
But then Saturday, oh that was a totally different vibe. We got up, dressed, and packed, then we headed to a nearby high school gymnasium to watch many, many hours of the Virginia high school wrestling championships. This was, of course, a big deal for many talented athletes, their coaches, and their families.
In my family’s case, two parents, three grandparents, four aunts and uncles, and one cousin had driven many hours from various directions to cheer on a high school senior who has had a terrific three years wrestling for his school. I don’t know if he felt our love radiating out to him, but I hope so.
There is nothing like elite-level athletics to distract one from one’s worries, including what’s going on in the world outside. On Saturday, we lived and breathed varsity wrestling and, as far as everyone was concerned, nothing else was happening in this country or anywhere in the world.
On the drive home afterward, as happens when I make quick day trips to see my family, I was filled with love and peace, with no room in my brain to think about {{{everything else}}}. It was exactly what I needed.
Who else has recently gone on or is planning a quick getaway?
I know exactly what you mean. We traveled up to Massachusetts to watch K compete in the USA Archery Indoor Nationals. It was all we could focus on and a very nice distraction. We then dropped my middle son in Boston to visit friends and we drove up to Quebec City. Relaxing and far, far away. Snowy and cold, just the way I like it!
Hubby Greg drove to Winston Salem to watch his Alma mater, Wake Forest vs UVa basketball. No matter who won “his team” would be a winner! (As kick would have it, UVa won! Connecting with old friends, having great courtside seats, made his 24 hour trip a delight!
Follow this with he and I driving up to Arlington to spend time with our 5 week old grandson (even got to take over “night duty” giving our daughter and husband an uninterrupted night of sleep. That 21 hour getaway filled our hearts.
